Diapherodes gigantea – Giant Green Stick Insect (UK-Bred)

Diapherodes gigantea is an impressive and elegant species of giant stick insect native to the Caribbean. Known for its bright green colouration and long, slender body, this species is beautifully adapted for life amongst leafy branches where it blends perfectly into surrounding foliage.

Growing to an impressive size, Diapherodes gigantea is one of the larger stick insects available in captivity and makes a striking display species. Despite their size they are generally calm and relatively straightforward to care for, making them a rewarding species for both beginners and experienced keepers.

What makes them special

  • Impressive size: Adults grow large and elegant, creating a very eye-catching display species.

  • Leafy camouflage: Their vibrant green colouration helps them blend seamlessly amongst fresh foliage.

  • Graceful appearance: Long legs and a slender body give this species a very elegant look.

Care & housing

  • Enclosure: A tall enclosure with good ventilation is important to allow adequate space for climbing and successful moulting.

  • Substrate & environment: A simple substrate such as coco fibre, soil mix, or leaf litter works well. Capillary matting is also commonly used for easier cleaning and egg collection.

  • Diet: Feeds readily on bramble, and will also accept oak, hazel, eucalyptus, and rose. Food plants should always be collected from pesticide-free areas and away from roadsides.

  • Temperature & humidity: Typical room temperatures (20–24 °C) are suitable. Light misting every day or two helps maintain humidity and provides drinking water.

  • Handling: Generally calm and easy to handle, but like all stick insects they should be treated gently.
