Taraxippus samarae – Mossy Stick Insect (UK-Bred)
Unusual, delicate, and beautifully adapted for camouflage, Taraxippus samarae — often known as the Mossy Stick Insect — is a fascinating and lesser-seen phasmid species in the hobby.
Captive bred in the UK, these individuals are healthy, feeding well, and well suited to life in a properly maintained enclosure.
What makes them special
- Unique appearance: They have an incredibly distinctive appearence with magnificent spiney legs and jagged bodies.
- Subtle camouflage: Excellent at blending into twigs and foliage thanks to their delicate form and natural colouring.
- Elegant species: Slender, graceful insects that make an interesting and unusual addition to any phasmid collection.
- Captive-bred: UK-reared stock that is well adapted to captive conditions.
Care & housing
- Enclosure: A tall, well-ventilated enclosure with plenty of thin branches for climbing and moulting. With plenty of height for them to climb around.
- Substrate: Moisture-retaining substrate such as coco fibre or soil or oak mulch helps maintain humidity. Capillary matting is also an option, better for collecting eggs more easily but does have a more sterile look to it.
- Humidity & temperature: Keep warm (around 22–26 °C) with moderate humidity and light misting every few days.
- Diet: Feeds primarily on ferns but will also accept bracken and some bramble. It is best to provide a mixture of these. Provide fresh foliage regularly.
