Phyllium philippinicum – Leaf Insect (UK-Bred)
A fantastic introduction to leaf insects, Phyllium philippinicum is a hardy and reliable species, ideal for beginners and experienced keepers alike. With their broad, leaf-like bodies, they are a classic display insect and a great starting point for anyone new to phasmids.
These UK-bred individuals are robust, well established, and feeding strongly on readily available foodplants.
What makes them special
- Excellent beginner species: Hardy, forgiving, and well suited to first-time keepers.
- Classic leaf mimicry: Beautiful green, leaf-shaped bodies with natural veining.
- Clear difference between sexes: Males are smaller, slimmer, and capable of flight, while females grow larger and heavier with limited flight ability.
- Captive-bred in the UK: Strong, healthy stock accustomed to captive conditions.
Care & housing
- Enclosure: A tall, well-ventilated enclosure is essential, allowing plenty of height for safe moulting.
- Temperature: Ideal range of 22–26 °C, with a natural drop at night to around 18 °C. Avoid prolonged exposure above 28 °C, as this can be harmful.
- Humidity: Light misting daily is recommended — aim to dampen the enclosure and leaves rather than spraying the insects directly.
- Diet: Feeds readily on bramble, rose and oak, both widely available and reliable foodplants. Provide fresh foliage regularly.
