What makes them special
- Exceptional camouflage: Broad, leaf-shaped bodies with detailed veining for a highly convincing disguise.
- Variable colouration: Nymphs begin green, but as they mature some individuals may develop beautiful orange, autumn leaf-like tones — adding real variety to a colony.
- Hardy and adaptable
- Captive-bred in the UK
Care & housing
- Enclosure: A tall, well-ventilated enclosure with plenty of vertical space for climbing and moulting (at least three times body length).
- Temperature: Best kept between 22–26 °C. They will tolerate some fluctuation, but prolonged exposure above 30 °C can increase the risk of fatalities.
- Humidity: Light daily misting is recommended. In warmer summer conditions, increase to 2–3 light sprays per day, while in cooler periods reduce to once daily/every other day.
- Diet: Feeds well on bramble, rose, and oak. Provide fresh foliage regularly for best results.
Life cycle
- Growth: Nymphs typically take 6–9 months to reach maturity.
- Adult lifespan: Females generally live 6–9 months, while males tend to live 3–6 months.
- Breeding: Females usually begin laying eggs 6–8 weeks after reaching maturity.
- Egg development: Eggs hatch in approximately 3 months under suitable conditions.
