Phyllium gardabagusi – Java Leaf Insect
One of the more recently described members of the leaf insect family, Phyllium gardabagusi was formally named in 2020 from specimens collected on Mount Argopuro in Java, Indonesia. It's named after Garda Bagus, an Indonesian collector and breeder credited with helping establish a number of Phyllium species within the hobby.
Like other members of the genus, it's a master of camouflage — its broad, flattened body and vein-marked wings mimic a living leaf right down to the edges. Colouration is variable but typically a vibrant pale green, with some individuals showing reddish or greyish-brown mottling across the body.
As with other leaf insects, they do best in a tall, well-ventilated enclosure with high humidity, fed on bramble (blackberry), oak, rose or hazel. Nymphs in particular benefit from careful misting, as they dont like getting too wet. Temperatures should be maintained between 22 - 26 degrees C.
All our stock is captive bred, either by ourselves or by trusted breeders here in the UK — no wild-collected animals.
