Oreophoetes peruana 3rd - 4th Instars x 6
Oreophoetes peruana – Peruvian Fern Stick Insect (UK-Bred)
Delicate, colourful, and unlike most stick insects, Oreophoetes peruana is a beautiful species with bold markings and a preference for damp, fern-like environments. Captive-bred here in the UK, these insects are perfect for keepers looking for something a little different.
What makes them special
Brightly marked: Nymphs have vivid black and yellow striped colouration. Once matured, males develop a vivid red body with black legs. The females are larger and still posess some red colouration but it is much more subdued and some of the striped markings of the nymphs are still present in the adult females.
Compact size: Adults reach around 5–7 cm, making them easy to house and manage.
Group-friendly: Peaceful by nature, they can be kept in colonies without issue.
Unique needs: Thrive in cooler, humid setups with forest ferns readily available.
Care & housing
Enclosure: Medium-sized, upright tank with good ventilation. Provide plenty of branches and foliage for climbing and moulting.
Substrate & environment: Moist substrate - a mix of decayed oak and beech with sphagnum moss would work well to keep the humidity high. Avoid hot, dry conditions.
Diet: They will take most forest ferns and bracken
Handling: They make for a stunning display species though they are delicate handling should be kept to a minimum.
