Mecynorrhina harrisi – Snake Tongue Flower Beetle (UK-Bred)

Also known as the Snake Tongue Flower Beetle, Mecynorrhina harrisi is a striking African species admired for its size, colour, and lively behaviour. With glossy markings and impressive stature, these beetles make an excellent addition to any beetle collection.

What makes them special

  • Snake Tongue Flower Beetle: Named for their unusual horn, which resembles a forked tongue.

  • Impressive size: Adults are robust and beautifully patterned with males reaching 5–6 cm or more, and females reaching around 3 - 4cm.

  • Day-active: Active during daylight hours, feeding on fruit and beetle jelly — fantastic display insects.

  • Captive-bred: UK-raised stock, hardier and better adapted than wild imports.

Care & housing

  • Adults: Can be housed together in a roomy, well-ventilated enclosure with climbing structures and a deep substrate for egg laying.

  • Larvae: Must be kept individually. This species is highly cannibalistic during the larval stage, and if housed together will usually compete until only one remains.

  • Substrate: A mix of decayed hardwood and leaf litter provides both food and burrowing space. Additional protein is also recommended for this species in the form of high protein pellets and gamarus shrimp. which can be added to the substrate in small quantities one to two times a week.

  • Feeding: Adults thrive on soft fruits and beetle jelly. Replace food regularly to avoid bacteria build up in the enclosure.

  • Conditions: Larvae do best between 20 and 24 °C with substrate that is damp but not saturated with water. Adults can tolerate much warmer temperatures and we find their egg production increases when kept with a basking spot.
