Lopaphus speralus 3rd - 4th Instar x 5

Lopaphus speralus 3rd - 4th Instar x 5

£20.00Price

Compared to many slender phasmids, Lopaphus sphaeralus has a more solid build with prominent spines along the body and legs, giving it a striking prehistoric appearance. Care should be taken when handling as they can be quite skittish, a beautiful species with interesting sexual dimorphism, makes them perfecty suited for someone looking for an impressive display species rather than a species to be handled regularly. Their impressive look make them a rewarding species for keepers looking for something a little different from the more commonly kept stick insects.

What makes them special

  • Distinctive spiny appearance: The body and legs are covered in pronounced spines, giving this species a rugged and armoured look.

  • Excellent camouflage: Their bark-like colouration allows them to blend naturally into woody branches.

  • Peculiar colouration of males: A turquoise thorax with green backlegs and orange/reddish front legs, rough looking copper/brown wings cover the abdomen.  WHeras females are green/brown and rough looking to help them calmoflage.

Care & housing

  • Enclosure: A tall, well-ventilated enclosure is recommended, providing plenty of vertical climbing space and suitable branches for moulting.

  • Substrate & environment: A moisture-retaining substrate such as coco fibre, soil mix, or leaf litter works well. Capillary matting can also be used for easier cleaning and egg collection.

  • Diet: Feeds readily on bramble, and may also accept oak or hazel. Always collect food plants from areas free from pesticides and away from the roadside.

  • Temperature & humidity: Normal room temperatures (around 20–24 °C) are suitable. Good humidity is important, spray regularly while allowing the enclosure to dry before spraying them again to avoid it becoming saturated.

  • Handling: Best handled very gently if handled at all - they will drop legs if when startled!
