Hierodula membranacea – Giant Asian Mantis (UK-Bred)

Hierodula membranacea, the Giant Asian Mantis, is a large, confident and easy to keep species perfect for beginners. These UK-bred individuals are feeding well and already showing the bold, curious nature that makes this species a keeper favourite.

What makes them special

  • Large and impressive: Females can reach 8 - 9 cm, making them one of the larger mantis species in the hobby.

  • Bold and confident: Active hunters that rarely hide — ideal display species.

  • Easy to care for: Hardy and adaptable, suitable for beginners and experienced mantid keepers alike.

  • Captive-bred in the UK: Strong, healthy individuals accustomed to standard captive conditions.

Care & housing

  • Enclosure: Provide a tall, well-ventilated setup — at least three times the mantis’s length in height for safe moulting.

  • Temperature & humidity: Warmth around 22 - 26°C with moderate humidity. Mist lightly every couple of days to maintain moisture without oversaturating.

  • Feeding: Voracious eaters! Feed on crickets, roaches, and other suitable live foods of appropriate size. Remove uneaten prey, especially if the mantis are actively swatting prey away. As this can indicate they are coming up to shed their skins.

  • Behaviour: Females are more robust and territorial — house mantids separately to prevent aggression and cannibalism.
