First time keeping this species for us and they are really something special!

Hermarchus sp. “Efate” – Efate Giant Stick Insect (UK-Bred)

Large, impressive, and beautifully camouflaged, Hermarchus sp. “Efate” is a striking species of giant stick insect originating from Efate Island in Vanuatu. With their elongated bodies and bark-like appearance, they are masters of camouflage and make a fascinating display species for keepers who enjoy larger phasmids.

Captive-bred and well established in culture, this species grows to an impressive size and develops into a robust insect that is both rewarding to rear and visually impressive in a well-planted enclosure.

What makes them special

  • Impressive size: Adult females can grow very large compared to many commonly kept phasmids, giving them a real presence in the enclosure.

  • Excellent camouflage: Their slender bodies and natural colouration allow them to blend perfectly among branches and foliage.

  • Strong sexual dimorphism: Females are large and sturdy while males are slimmer and more agile.

  • Active nocturnal feeders: Most activity takes place in the evening and at night, when they begin feeding and exploring the enclosure.

Care & housing

  • Enclosure: A tall, well-ventilated enclosure is recommended to provide plenty of vertical space for climbing and moulting.

  • Substrate & environment: A moisture-retaining substrate such as coco fibre, leaf litter, or a soil mix works well. Alternatively, capillary matting can be used for easier cleaning and egg collection.

  • Diet: Feeds readily on bramble, but will also accept oak, hazel, beech, and salal if available. Always collect food plants from areas free of pesticides or roadside pollution.

  • Temperature & humidity: Typical room temperatures (around 20–24 °C) work well. Light misting every day or two helps maintain humidity and provides drinking water.

  • Handling: Generally calm but best handled with care. Like many stick insects they may drop suddenly when disturbed, so gentle handling is recommended.
