Eurycantha calcarata – Giant Spiny Stick Insect (UK-Reared)

Discreet, dramatic and prehistoric in appearance — Eurycantha calcarata, often known as the Giant Spiny Stick Insect, is an insect lover’s dream. Captively bred in the UK and hardy for both beginners and experienced keepers, these impressive phasmids are a striking addition to any collection.

What makes them special

  • Robust and well-armoured: these stick insects have spines along their bodies that give them texture, character and a sense of being a “living sculpture.”

  • Sizeable specimens: This species reaches a really impressive size (often 10–12 cm body length or more, depending on sex), making them really stand out.

  • Fascinating behaviour: nocturnal feeders; slow, deliberate movements that mimic sticks often hiding together in large numbers during the day, to avoid predation by forming a huge mass that appears like a piece of tree bark.

Care & housing
To ensure your Eurycantha calcarata thrives, here are the essentials:

  • Food Plants: Bramble, Hazel, English Oak, Evergreen Oak, Rose, and Ivy (though Ivy should be used more sparingly as it can be toxic if fed in large quantities or too often)
  • Enclosure: A tall-slim setup works well. This provides enough height for climbing and plenty of room to hang and shed their skins. Strong mesh or ventilated lid is important to maintain airflow.

  • Substrate & decor: Use moisture-retaining substrate ; A mixture of soil, decayed leaf litter, coco fibre, bark, moss works well. Although, those that prefer a more sterile set up could use capillary matting instead. Just be sure to also provide a container with a substrate mix for adult females to lay their eggs. Providing a mixture of branches and bark pieces, will give them lots of opportunities to climb and rest.

  • Temperature & humidity: Moderate warmth (20 - 24°C is ideal but fluctuations of ±4°C are tolerated) with nighttime drops if possible; lightly mist the leaves daily/every other day depending on temperature conditions will provide enough humidity for drinking/shedding. Substrate should be damp but not saturated with water.

  • Handling & temperament: Generally docile, though males may show spiny defensive postures. Handle with care to avoid damaging limbs or spiny parts. I recommend that females be used for handling over the males as they tend to be more docile and their leg spines aren't as large.
