Dynastes granti – Western Hercules Beetle
A true giant of the North American beetle world, Dynastes granti is prized for its size, striking colouration, and the huge curved horns developed by mature males. Native to the south-western USA, this species has a body shape closer to the South American Dynastes hercules than its eastern cousin D. tityus, with a notably longer top horn and pale, granite-grey wing cases.
This is a slow-growing species, with larvae typically taking 15 to 20 months to develop before pupating, so patience is part of the appeal — many keepers enjoy following the larvae through their instars as they steadily grow. Larvae feed on decaying leaves and hardwood such as oak, beech, alder, maple and ash, so a bag of flake soil or well-rotted hardwood should be sourced in advance. Once they reach adulthood, they feed happily on soft fruits such as banana, or beetle jelly for convenience.
