Cryptophyllium limogese male/female Pair x 1
Cryptophyllium limogesi – Leaf Insect Pair (UK-Bred)
These Cryptophyllium limogesi are supplied as a sexed pair (1 male and 1 female). The female will be a large 5th–6th instar, while the male is significantly smaller. This is done intentionally to allow the male time to catch up in development. If both sexes are the same size when supplied, males often mature much sooner and may die before the females reach adulthood. Providing them at different sizes greatly increases the chances of successfully producing a mating pair.
Cryptophyllium limogesi is a spectacular species of leaf insect, perfectly adapted to mimic a living leaf. With broad, leaf-shaped bodies and intricate vein-like patterns, they are among the most convincing examples of camouflage found in the insect world.
This species makes an exceptional display insect and is always fascinating to observe, particularly when gently swaying to imitate leaves moving in the wind.
What makes them special
Incredible leaf mimicry: Their flattened bodies, natural colouration, and leaf-like veins make them almost indistinguishable from real foliage.
Sexual dimorphism: Females are broad and leaf-like, while males are slimmer with fully developed wings.
Excellent display species: One of the most visually striking phasmids available in captivity.
Fascinating behaviour: Often sway gently to mimic leaves moving in the breeze.
Care & housing
Enclosure: A tall, well-ventilated enclosure is recommended, providing plenty of climbing space and suitable branches for moulting.
Substrate & environment: A moisture-retaining substrate such as coco fibre or a soil mix works well, although capillary matting is often used to simplify cleaning and egg collection.
Diet: Feeds well on bramble, which is the most commonly used food plant in captivity but will also accept Hazel, Oak and Rose. Ensure food plants are collected from areas free from pesticides.
Temperature & humidity: Typical room temperatures (20–24 °C) are suitable. Leaf insects benefit from regular misting to maintain humidity and provide drinking water.
Handling: Best kept as a display species. While generally calm, they are delicate and should only be handled gently if necessary.
