Captive-bred Damon medius – Tailless Whip Scorpion (3-4 cm leg-span, UK-reared)
Step into the world of the extraordinary with these well-grown Damon medius – giant tailless whip scorpions, captive-bred right here in the UK. At approx. 3-4 cm leg-span, these specimens are mature enough to already display the amazing form, movement and character this species is known for.
What makes them special
Unlike true scorpions, these amblypygids are harmless: no stings, no venom, just fascinating behaviour and alien-like looks.
Their long, whip-like front “antennae” (antenniform legs) serve as delicate sensory organs; meanwhile their long spiny claws (pedipalps) are used to capture prey.
Since they’re captive bred, you get animals that are already acclimatised, with care routines better known, and lower risk of wild-collected issues.
Care & housing
To keep your Damon medius happy and healthy, here are the essentials:
Enclosure: Tall and spacious is best — provide plenty of vertical surfaces (branches, cork bark, bark flats) for climbing and molting.
Substrate: Keep substrate relatively moist and deep enough to retain humidity (e.g. mix of soil, sand, coco fibre, sphagnum moss).
Humidity & temperature: Maintain moderate warmth (20 - 24°C), and lightly mist daily/every other day, while maintaining good airflow.
Hiding spots: Plenty of hiding places, since these are cave dwelling, nocturnal, shy creatures.
Feeding: Small insects (fruitflies, crickets, roaches, etc.) will be readily taken; feeding frequency can be moderate given their size and metabolic needs.
